It is most definitely a matter of perspective, but it's also a matter of some other factors as listed above. I mean, it's difficult to hate a team that never wins or has little to no supporters. Most hated teams are usually good, have more fans (both nice and annoying fans), and get more media attention, which can often bother fans of other teams who feel their team is overshadowed or overlooked. The best way to take it is as a bizarre form of compliment. I'm sure Yankees fans are used to being hated and love every second of it.
