I'm aware Jay didn't want to leave when his time came, but whether Jay chose to retire or not, he was 'retired' from The Tonight Show by NBC. Retirement from something specific is not always a choice and I wasn't sure even if Jay wanted it or not he would get another shot at late night TV, but surprise surprise, NBC gave him another show and in the end created some great controversy with the results of this controversy yet to be seen.
